It’s tax time for 2020! The IRS began processing tax returns on Feb. 12, 2021, and many consumers are already working on their tax returns.
Consumers who receive coverage through Maryland Health Connection receive a 1095-A or 1095-B or both. The 1095-A is issued to the tax filer who has any household member enrolled in a private health plan with an advanced premium tax credit. Private health plan consumers need the 1095-A Form to reconcile the amount of estimated tax credit received in advance against the amount they are eligible for based on their actual MAGI (modified adjusted gross income) for the year.
Medicaid recipients receive a 1095-B to show their coverage months in Medicaid for the year. The 1095-B is not necessary for tax filing, but consumers may want to keep the form for their records. Split households, or households who are enrolled in a private health plan for some months and Medicaid or Maryland Children’s Health Program (MCHP) for other months may receive both forms.
1095-A forms are available for the prior plan year on or about Jan. 25 in consumer accounts. From their account, the consumer can download and save or print the applicable forms. If a consumer does not have an account, a worker may search for the form in the worker portal under the document search tab. Once the form is located, you can select the print/reprint button, which will send the form(s) to Maryland Health Connection’s printing center for printing and mailing. All 1095-As will also be mailed to the primary tax filer at the address provided in the application. 1095-As are prepared at the household level and are mailed to the primary tax filer. Consumers who receive their 1095-A and want to request a correction, or consumers who are seeking a 1095-A for a previous year, may call the customer service center at 1-855-642-8572 for assistance.
1095-B forms are available electronically in the consumer’s account beginning on or about Feb. 5 but will not be mailed to consumers except by request. As with 1095-As,a consumer who does not have an account may seek assistance from a worker, who can search for the form in the worker portal, then send the print job to the printing vendor for mailing. 1095-Bs are prepared at the individual level and are mailed to the primary applicant.
To request a printed 1095-B easily and receive it quickly, consumers should call the customer service center at 1-855-642-8572. Requests by phone are processed within three business days.
Consumers may also request a printed 1095-B in writing by sending their request, along with their name and phone number, to mhbe.1095b@maryland.gov or to Maryland Health Connection, PO Box 857, Lanham, MD 20703. Someone from Maryland Health Connection will contact the consumer by phone to complete the request. Requests by email or mail are processed within 30 business days.
