Low-cost ways to stay healthy this Father’s Day

For National Men’s Health Month, we’re sharing five ways Maryland dads can get on the track to better health, for no or low cost.

These simple steps can make sure you’re around for many more Father’s Days:

1) Schedule an annual checkup with your doctor.

It’s covered by your plan for free (no copay or coinsurance), even if you haven’t met your annual deductible.

Tips to help you man up and make that appointment.

2) Get the basic health screenings you need. They’re covered too.

Visit a doctor in your plan’s network, and you can get preventive care, including many screenings, for free.

These include blood pressure and cholesterol screenings, colorectal cancer screenings, screening for Type 2 diabetes, diet counseling, and many more. See what’s covered.

3) Be a quitter.

Maryland offers free, confidential help quitting any kind of tobacco, such as cigarettes, cigars or smokeless.

Call 1-800-QUIT-NOW or visit smokingstopshere.com.

4) See if you could qualify to get health coverage and financial help to make it more affordable.

If you’ve recently had a major life event, like a new baby or recent adoption, moving to Maryland, or loss of other health coverage, you may able to enroll in coverage now through Maryland Health Connection.

Visit MarylandHealthConnection.gov/help to find free, local help applying now or to learn more about financial help available.

5) Bring your kids this Sunday to the Fit Fathers event in Silver Spring.

The Fit Fathers Day celebration is 10 a.m. to noon June 19 at the Silver Spring Civic Center. The free event features celebrity fitness trainers, youth exercise activities, games, healthy snacks, a kids’ area, giveaways and contests.

Representatives from our Montgomery County partner will be there with information on enrolling in health coverage. Learn more and RSVP today.
