CareFirst has been informed by Anthem Inc. (like CareFirst, a Blue Cross Blue Shield company) of a cyber-attack on Anthem’s information technology system and a resulting data breach. It is unknown at this time the extent to which the data breach may affect members of other Blue Cross Blue Shield plans. CareFirst is working with Anthem and the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association as the breach is investigated and will provide information about any impact on CareFirst members. Amerigroup, one of the Medicaid MCOs, is a subsidiary of Anthem. Medicaid has more than 200,000 Amerigroup members. Medicaid is working with Amerigroup on the details. The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH) is instructing Amerigroup members who have questions to contact Amerigroup’s consumer assistance line at 800-600-4441.
Anthem is the second-largest health insurer in the United States with nearly 40 million U.S. customers. It said late Wednesday that hackers of its IT systems had stolen personal information about current and former consumers and employees. It said the breach did not appear to involve medical information or financial details such as credit card numbers. Anthem said it would send a letter and e-mail to everyone whose information was stored in the affected database.
